ICA-CP: 5/18/2009 - Java Jeopardy

Good afternoon!

Your mission today is to create a unique Java Jeopardy game in Powerpoint. The game will have 25 questions and answers. Each person must create one game. You make work in teams of two or three. If you work in a team of two, you must create two Java Jeopardy games, each game must have unique questions (questions in the first game may not be re-used for the second game). If you work in a team of three, you must create three unique Java Jeopard games. You may not use any of the questions that are already in the ICA CP Java Jeopardy 1.ppt file. Resources to use include our class blog, questions of the week, your blogs, and Internet resources. The questions and answers MUST be something related to Java Computer Programming and technology. At least 10 of your questions and answers must be about the Java programming language and Object Oriented Programming. The other 15 question/answer pairs may be general computer technology related questions.

All of the information you need to create your Java Jeopard is in our lesson plan for today. The lesson plan may be found here: http://lesson.taskstream.com/lessonbuilder/v.asp?LID=p1c5cgfqcxhdzlzf

Here are the steps:
Step 1) Go to the lesson plan. Download JeopardyPlay.doc and ICA CP Jeopardy 1.ppt.
Step 2) Read JeopardyPlay.doc
Step 3) In Powerpoint, play the game ICA CP Jeopardy 1.ppt for about 10 minutes to get an idea of how it works.
Step 4) Go to the lesson plan. Download jeopardytemplate25.ppt and JeopardyDirections.doc.
Step 5) Read the directions in JeopardyDirections.doc.
Step 6) Using the directions in JeopardyDirections.doc, open jeopardytemplate25.ppt in Powerpoint, and create your own version of Java Jeopardy. Please note: you have to exercise a bit of critical thinking expertise here to figure which slide number to use for the answer and matching question.
Step 7) Email your powerpoint file to me at: dclingingsmith@icacademy.org

ICA-CP: 5/14/09

Good morning!

It's all of us who are not seniors in class today. We are going to try moodle. Here's what we are doing today:

1) Log into moodle: http://webteachertools.com/wtt

2) Read the note. Post a favorite joke of your own to the notes area.

3) Go to the forum area and read the news. Post your own forum entry about a technology topic in the news today, with a link to it. Then, respond to to at least 4 other topic postings.
4) Post your reaction to my topic in the forum, Picture of Debbie ClingingsmithDella: Dell's answer to what women want?

5) Go to the upload area. Upload a small, but cute picture.

6) At the end of class, we will gather our feedback about using moodle.

Here are the logins:

ICA-CP: 5/12/2009 - Flow Charting

Good morning!

Before the seniors disappear, we are going to make flow charts. For a reference to flow chart symbols, see this link: http://www.breezetree.com/articles/flow-chart-symbols.htm

Two flow charts are due by the end of class today. The first flow chart should describe how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The other flow chart should describe how a signal at an intersection works for pedestrians and vehicles. It should include red, green, yellow lights for a vehicle. For pedestrians, it should cover stop and walk lights as well as a countdown to stop, plus bird sounds for those who are blind.

ICA-CP: 5/6/2009 - Applet

OK gang, the JADs aren't working in Motodev. So, we are switching to applets. Instead of downloading, installing, and running 3 JAD games in Motodev, get 3 applets and run them in a web browser.

Here is some background:
1) All standalone Java programs have a main method that starts the program running. However, an applet is not a standalone Java program. An applet needs a browser, like Firefox, to start it running.

2) When you get an applet, it is probably zipped or compressed. To uncompress the file, right click on it and select Extract All from the Windows drop down menu.

3) Once you uncompress the zip file, you should have a .htm or .html and at least a .class file, which is the compiled Java code. To run your applet, click the .htm or .html file. You must have a .class file and a .html file. You may also have additional file if your program includes the source code (a .java file) and pictures (probably .gif or .jpg files).

4) If you do not have an .htm or .html file in you zip package, you may make your own. Or, you may keep looking for applet .zip files which already have a .htm/.html file made for you.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR ELIZA TO A JAD! We will do something else next class.

Question of the Week: Makeup Topic

[The Question of the Week is due on Friday, 5/8/2009 by 5:00 PM, if you need to make up some points. It should be at least 250 words in length. Include two research links that lend support to your answer. ]

Question courtesy of Leighton:

Background: Conficker is a computer worm focused on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is suspected to be the largest computer worm infection since the SQL Slammer that was launched in 2003. What makes this worm so hard to conteract is that it uses advanced techniques to infect your computer causing top antivirus software companies to put over $250,000 on the heads of the person or persons responsible for the worm. The worm was released in 2008 and on April 1st of this year it was thought to launch, but as of today it is still sitting in millions of computers worldwide mutating and becoming harder to stop.

Question(s): Is your computer infected by Conficker? How would you find out if it has been infected? How can you protect your computer from getting the Conficker worm? What could be the reprocussion if the worm were turned on today?

Question of the Week: Due 5/8/2009

[The Question of the Week is due on Friday, 5/8/2009 by 5:00 PM. It should be at least 250 words in length. Include two research links that lend support to your answer. ]

Background: Various world governments have been considering taxing the Internet in different ways. For example, the BBC in Britain is considering a tax on Google advertising. In the USA, Internet access taxation has been banned by Congress until 2014. Some have suggested that levying a fraction of a cent tax on each sent email will stop spam.

Charge for sending email to stop spam: http://news.cnet.com/Paying-for-e-mail-An-idea-whose-time-has-come/2010-1028_3-5154136.html?tag=txt

Question(s): Do you think Internet access and email should be "taxed"? We tax motorists for licensing cars and levy a charge for water, garbage, and other household utilities. Why should (or shouldn't) we charge for being able to use the Internet? Is Internet access a right or a privlege (like driving or having a car)? Be sure to include two links to justify your argument.

ICA-CP: 5/4/2009 - Work on Razr and test makeup

Good afternoon!

Please work on ringtones, finding 3 JAD games for the Motodev Razr simulator, and making your Eliza program into a JAD. This work is worth 80 points, and is due on Friday, 5/8/09, by the end of class. To make the ringtone with your voice, you can review a Powerpoint slideset on making a podcast (or ringtone) at this link: http://www.slideshare.net/dlclingingsmith/podcasting-basics If you view the Powerpoint presentation, view slides number 5 through 36.

Dujour and Tiara need to take this test on datatypes and strings: http://www.quia.com/quiz/1753306.html For everyone else, if you want to improve your score, it's optional. It is turned-on until 5:00 PM today.

Though it is optional, Erica, Lindsay, Ashley, Laura, and Tui, you should re-take this test on Object Oriented Programming concepts: http://www.quia.com/quiz/1774354.html Anyone else who wishes to improve a grade is invited to re-take the test also. It is turned-on until 5:00 PM today.
